Gambella: Advancing Agricultural Modernization in Gambella Region:
Regional President Mrs. Alemitu Umot emphasized the need to enhance the adoption of agricultural technologies to transition farmers in Gambella from traditional practices to modern methods.
In support of this initiative, Mercy Corps, in collaboration with the World Food Program WFP and the Regional Microfinance and Savings Institution, recently held a tractors handover ceremony, providing nine modern tractors to various development associations, cooperatives, and enterprises across nine districts.
President Alemitu Umot highlighted that this timely support is crucial for improving food security and living conditions in the region, facilitating effective agricultural development.
Deputy Governor Dr Gatluak Ruon urged stakeholders to utilize these tractors efficiently to boost agricultural production and reduce food dependency. He called upon development associations and cooperatives to actively contribute by plowing fields and offering necessary services.
Ato Uchan Uchan, Director of the Regional Microfinance and Savings Institution, noted ongoing collaborations with Mercy Corps to benefit local farmers. Mr. Nixon Ulang, the WFP’s Gambella Region Representative, reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing support for farmers, stressing the importance of technology transfer in driving production growth. He encouraged farmers to make optimal use of the tractors to maximize their productivity.
