Gambella: Enhancing Food Security in the Majang National Zone: The Role of the Food Systems Strengthening Program.
The Food Systems Strengthening Program (FSRP) aims to enhance the food system in the Majang National Zone by significantly increasing food production and productivity, thereby enabling local communities to thrive and sustain themselves. To achieve these goals, the FSRP has launched a variety of initiatives focused on agricultural development.
A key activity currently underway is the construction of small scale irrigation projects, which are essential for optimizing water usage and ensuring crops receive adequate hydration throughout the growing season. Additionally, the establishment of a modern marketing center is being prioritized to improve market access for local farmers, enhancing their ability to sell their produce effectively.
This fiscal year, a notable achievement has been the planting of 250,000 improved coffee and avocado seedlings along the Shai River in Godere Woreda and in selected kebeles and farmers’ fields. These improved varieties are expected to boost the production and productivity of these vital cash crops.
Ato Habtamu Gedamu, the program’s head, also highlighted an important irrigation project in Akash
Kebele, which will cover 50 hectares and benefit approximately 250 farmers upon completion. This irrigation system will support local farmers in cultivating their crops more efficiently and sustainably. Additionally, a livestock breeding center in Akash Kebele is nearing completion, which will further enhance agricultural productivity in the region.
In Tolina Tokali Kebele, a fish hatchery project is being developed to promote innovative fish production methods. This initiative aims to diversify the local economy and provide additional protein sources for the community.
